Why Do Animals Eat the Bark and Wood of Trees and Shrubs?
نویسنده
چکیده
The most consummate wood feeders are the billions of termites throughout the world that literally devour thousands of tons of woody debris every year in forests as well as lumber in buildings. Many of our most serious and damaging insect pests are the bark beetles and wood borers that feed on the parts of trees for which they are named. Even mammals ranging in size from mice to elephants consume bark and woody branches. They all have specialized digestive systems that allow them to extract nourishment from this material, something humans cannot do. To understand how bark and wood can serve as food for these critters requires knowledge of cell wall structure, bark and wood anatomy, movement and storage of food in trees, and the variations in digestive systems among animals.

Why Be a Shrub? A Basic Model and Hypotheses for the Adaptive Values of a Common Growth Form
Shrubs are multi-stemmed short woody plants, more widespread than trees, important in many ecosystems, neglected in ecology compared to herbs and trees, but currently in focus due to their global expansion. We present a novel model based on scaling relationships and four hypotheses to explain the adaptive significance of shrubs, including a review of the literature with a test of one hypothesis...

Pistachio trees (Pistacia) play combined roles in ecotourism, conservation of soil and water, flood control, forage production for domestic and wild animals and resin and seed production in arid and semi-arid areas. It is very important to protect this species but, in recent decades, several factors have caused damaged to these trees. One of the most important factors of Pistacia forest destruc...
متن کاملBiosecurity Implications of Exotic Beetles Attacking Trees and Shrubs in New Zealand
A survey of exotic beetles that attack trees or shrubs in New Zealand found 51 species of mainly Australian (58%) and European (25%) origin. In addition, three biological control agents have been released against woody adventive plant pests. The host range of most species is restricted to exotic crop and ornamental plants in New Zealand. Nine polyphagous borers sometimes attack dead wood of ind...
متن کاملEvaluation of non-destructive Meyer method for determination of bark volume of beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) in different geographical aspects
The non-destructive Meyer method was evaluated to determine the bark volume of beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stands in north of Iran. The sample size was 185 standing trees collected from 4 geographical aspects (north, south, west and east) aspects. The constant k values and bark thickness (2e mm) of 185 standing trees were used to calculate the bark volume by the Meyer method. In this study,...

Field surveys in Zagros forests located in western Iran were done to study some aspects of biology and host range of Biscogniauxia mediterranea during 2014-2016. The ability of its conidia and ascospores to cause the disease was evaluated under greenhouse condition. Ascospore viability and development of anamorph and teleomorph were surveyed under different conditions. The pathogen host range w...
